The many benefits of a body detox include clear skin, weight loss, and a strengthened immune system.  However, the actual process of detoxing can cause some temporary uncomfortable symptoms. These symptoms are, in fact, a positive sign; known as a healing crisis.

Common symptoms of a healing crisis include:

  • headaches
  • lethargy
  • temporary muscle aches
  • skin breakout
  • a coated, pasty tongue
  • flu-like symptoms
  • irritability
  • difficulty sleeping
  • cravings
  • nausea

A healing crisis can lead you to think that your detox program is not being effective.  However, the opposite is true.  The symptoms are a sign that the body is cleaning itself of all the old, hidden, accumulated toxins.  A healing crisis can also cause you to suffer from old symptoms that the body has suppressed.  

A healing crisis occurs as old toxins that have been buried away in fat tissue and internal organs are temporarily released back into the body’s system as they are flushed out.  The more toxic your system is, the more severe the healing crisis can be.  The symptoms usually pass within a few days. 

During a healing crisis the most important thing to do is to continue with your body detox.  If the detoxing process is cut short, the toxins that have been released into the system will settle back into the body tissues.

Follow these tips to ease the symptoms of a healing crisis:

  • Drink at 6-8 glasses of distilled water a day 
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Eat light meals
  • Soak for 10 minutes in an Epsom salt (2 cups) bath
  • massage therapy
