Sunglasses are for more than just fashion, they are a necessity to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.   UV rays can cause permanent eye damage and can also cause the development of cataracts.  Do you know how to choose sunglasses that will properly protect your peepers?

Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing sunglasses:

  • Always choose sunglasses with a label that indicates they block 99 – 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Stay away from sunglasses that are labeled “cosmetic” and do not provide details on UV protection.
  • Choose larger lenses or wraparound lenses instead of smaller lenses.

  • Blue-blocking lenses – These lenses are usually tinted amber and can make distant objects easier to see. However, they may make it difficult to discriminate the hues in traffic lights.  Also, not all blue-blocking lenses offer adequate UV protection.

  • Polarized lenses –  These lenses reduce glare. They do not offer UV protection unless they are specifically treated with UV coating.

  • Photochromic lenses – These lenses reduce glare and help maintain clarity.  It may take time for these lenses to adjust to different light conditions. Not all photochromic lenses offer adequate UV protection, so be sure to check the product label.

  • Polycarbonate lenses –  These lenses provide protection from impact injuries.  Polycarbonate lenses do offer adequate protection from UV rays.

  • Contact lenses – Some contact lenses also offer UV protection, but because they don’t cover the entire eye, it is necessary to wear sunglasses for UV protection during outdoor activities.
